Beginning
Dating back to the 1600's, the first American
settlers became bored of the usual bar maids and ladies of the
night for companionship. With loving and loyal women scarce in
their pioneer population, they began writing letters to women
back in Europe. After some correspondence, the men would arrange
for the women to travel to America, they would marry, and begin
their new life together. Another practice around the same time
period was that mail order brides were shipped from London to
America as payment for items such as tobacco. Men could take
their pick from the shipment and a marriage would soon follow.
The Resurgence
Mail order brides became widely
popular across the globe in the 1980's with men seeking mostly
Asian women from countries such as the Philippines and Thailand.
Then with the fall of the Soviet Union, Russian and Ukrainian women
joined the pool of available bachelorettes. Their beauty and
intelligence made Russian mail order brides an instant favorite.
This match making system was originally a printed catalog where
men could peruse the pages, read the profiles, and select a wife.
Then in the 1990's, the Internet replaced the archaic catalog
method. This sped up, as well as transformed, the mail order
bride industry.
The Modern Mail Order Bride
Long
gone are the days where men simply pick and purchase a foreign
wife. The label of "mail order bride" still lingers, however the
process today is an online match making system where marriage is
decided upon by both the gentleman and the lady. The gentlemen
are typically open-minded, intelligent bachelors that find women
